THE LEARNER’S JOURNEY
Founding The Learner’s Journey feels like the career that I have been preparing for in the first 35 years of professional life. From Engineering in the public and private sectors to managing game lodges to coaching lifesaving to jewelry designing to being a fixer for a museum exhibit designer to finally arriving in the international university “industry”, every step in my journey has helped me to develop skills for the next step. After almost 4 years as a representative agent for international universities, I realized that the intersection between what international universities is recruiting for and what parents want is happy students. What I mean by that is that international universities want to recruit students, but not any student, a student who is happy and successful at their university and who will go on to be an ambassador for the university and a dynamic force of their generation. How do we ensure that students find their best-fit university? Enter The Learner’s Journey, university guidance counselling, and University Speaking, a digizine for South Africans wanting to study overseas – my answer to the question. Sending our children off to an international university is not for the fainthearted, emotionally, or financially. Having done it twice, I can say that the process is not simple, and there are so many “life” factors to consider. What we want to hear from our children on the other end of a phone call is excitement, fulfillment, curiosity, and confidence. Not everything will be unicorns and rainbows, especially for a first-year student, but if a student is at the right place, they will work to build their support system. With 25 000 universities in the world, where do you get started in your search for an international university? This is where I am the best fit. Being a graduate of acclaimed international universities, University of Florida (BSc (High Honors) Civil Engineering) and University of California, Berkeley (MSc Civil Engineering (Geotechnical)), and having lived as an immigrant for most of my life, I have a deep appreciation for the excitement and challenges that face you at the start of this journey to a university abroad. School counsellors are trying to meet the needs of hundreds of students. Having a working knowledge of the international university space is a full-time pursuit, one that requires consistent training, and one that many school counselors lack the time and resources to pursue. In 2025, the The Learner’s Journey - Counsellors’ Community was founded to be a training and support system on international university admission for high school counsellors. The process of sorting through destination countries and universities considering curricula and degree match is one that requires a methodical approach. There is a lot of information to sift through, and it is time consuming. In my years as a university representative, I learned and continue to learn about university programs, so that I can bring that knowledge and my network of university representatives to my counselling practice and my student-centered approach to guiding. Together, through a series of conversations either online or in person, I will help you to find an international university that best suits your needs. Whether you seek a university that is in a particular country, or the middle of the city, or in a campus town, or a large campus, or a small campus, or renowned for a specific subject choice, I will guide you with unbiased , impartial, and accurate information to the university that will ignite your journey forward. I don’t believe in curating a student. I believe in helping students to create their own criteria for their next step in education and finding a fit based on those. In my experience and opinion, approaching the process in this way results in students ending up where they are meant to be. There is nothing better than hearing from a student that they have been accepted to one of their university choices and that they are excited for the next step in their journey. I have helped hundreds of learners and students find their way through the complex process of finding their best fit university!
