ATTAINING INDEFINITE LEAVE TO REMAIN
Ancestry visa's are typically granted for a five-year period. Upon completion of this term, if you have maintained continuous residence in the UK – defined as not spending over 180 days outside the country in any given 12 months during the five years – you can apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). However, if your Ancestry visa was issued before April 2006, it's likely valid for four years. In this case, you can request a one-year extension before applying for ILR. Once you've held ILR status for 12 months, you may qualify to become a naturalized British citizen, thereby obtaining UK citizenship.
